A personal creation. Testing of materials and shaders, lighting and rendering techniques. Software used: 3dsmax 2010 and vray 1.5 sp3. Photoshop CS4 for post work.
The lighting is simply a vray sun & sky system. I used reinhard color mapping with a 0.4 burn factor. Vray physical cam was adjusted to correct exposure.
The lower the burn number in reinhard the closer to exponential you get. Exponential color mapping is like having reinhard burn multiplier at 0. Linear tends to work better with 2.2 gamma rather than 1.0 gamma because the mid tones are brighter you dont need your lights to burn so much.
